Before maps came into use, how did seafarers explore unknown places and not get lost at sea? In the Middle East, the ancient Phoenicians used the sun and the stars as their guides. In Northern Europe, where clear skies were less reliable, the Vikings watched the behavior of birds. As well as studying the flight paths of birds, the Polynesians studied the direction and type of waves to help them to navigate around the vast southern Pacific Ocean.
