Past Simple
一般过去时
Use the past simple to describe a completed action in the past.
用“一般过去时”来描述一个发生在过去并已经完成的动作。

Past progressive (or past continuous)
过去进行时
was/were + verb (-ing)
Use the past progressive to describe a continuous action in the past, which extended over a period of time.
用“过去进行时”来描述一个发生在过去的持续动作，这个动作延续一段时间。

 

 Examples:
Last Saturday, I went to a concert with my best friend. (past simple)
Last Sunday, I was walking my dog in the park when it spotted a cat.
(past progressive)
